Electric power steering pump conversion

Hey there for context my reasoning for this conversion is my Small block Chevy v8 swap but I know conversions like these can be great for any engine swap and in some cases drifting so I figured I’d post this as a successful proof of concept and what you would need

Volvo makes two kinds of power steering pumps, both of which are exactly the same aside from the reservoir one style (the one I used) has the reservoir built in and the other has a small remote reservoir either or will work

Most of these can be found used on eBay for around 75-200 dollars (my only recommendation is find one that comes with the connectors prior)

basis of install comes to mounting them somewhere in the chassis I didn’t retain the stock ecu given my motor is carbureted so I mounted it where the ecu box used to be

with the brackets welded to the chassis and painted I went ahead and mounted the pump

as for the lines you have 2 connections one being a return and one being a high pressure from the pump connecting to the steering rack there’s many ways to do this I essentially just cut the hard lines and used the proper size power steering hose along with 2 incredibly tight hose clamps on each line to be safe

with the hoses connected the easiest and last thing to worry about is wiring theres Two methods with this pump one being the most basic and simple and one being not that if y you do it the simple way you just attach the positive and negative wires to direct battery and ground connections and connect the light grey wire to a 12v ignition, however the Volvo pumps use a CANBUS connection to determine load for the power steering pump so it will run in limo mode this way (70 percent load) for my application this is fine and I can always change it down the line, the more complex way is essentially connect the remaining two wires to this kit or one like it that essentially lets you actively control what the load on the power steering is with a knob so 0-100 control

that’s essentially all there was too it I filled the built in reservoir, ran the system for upwards of 30 minutes filling the reservoir as needed and didn’t leak a single drop, I’ll update this if any issues come up or if I add the canbus controller and a writeup on that
